So good to listen to Reeny Smith perform for the Dartmouth Summer Sunshine series today!

Did you notice the beautiful African Nova Scotian flags flying on the bridge? Today is Canada’s first official Emancipation Day.

Back in March, Parliament passed legislation to officially mark this day to honour and recognize people of African descent for their courage in the face of the transatlantic slave trade—and in recognition of the intergenerational harm on their families, communities, and culture.

We also celebrate and honour the incredible Black activists who have worked so hard to tackle anti-Black racism, to fight for equality and inclusion—and who continue to do so.

On this Emancipation Day, join me in recommitting to fighting anti-Black racism, racial discrimination, and intolerance.
