Did you know that today is the 75th anniversary of Viola Desmond’s historic stance against segregation in Canada?

In 1946, Viola Desmond bravely defied provincial law by sitting in a “whites-only” section of a movie theatre in New Glasgow—she was arrested and dragged out of the theatre. After her arrest, she fought the charges all the way to the Nova Scotia Supreme Court.

Her actions were pivotal for Canadian civil rights, and pushed the pursuit of racial equality.

But Viola Desmond’s story does not end here. She was a brilliant entrepreneur worth celebrating.
