Good news for seniors who saw a reduction in GIS or Allowance benefits after receiving pandemic benefits!
We all know that this pandemic has been challenging for just about everyone. And we know that it’s been particularly hard for seniors across Canada—especially those most vulnerable.
I’ve heard from seniors in Dartmouth—Cole Harbour and right across Canada who took pandemic benefits because they needed them, and they shouldn’t be penalized with lower benefit payments.
I can tell you first-hand that our government is seized with this, and we’re delivering a one-time, automatic payment to GIS and Allowance recipients who received benefits in 2020 and saw a reduction, compensating for the full, annualized loss amount.
Today, Minister Kamal Khera took action and introduced Bill C-12 to make sure that this issue never happens to any senior in Canada again!
Bill C-12 will ensure that any income received under the CRCB, CRB, CRSB & CWLB will be excluded for the purposes of calculating the amount of GIS and Allowance payable beginning in July 2022.
Helping seniors should never be a partisan issue, and I’m hopeful that all parties will join us and help pass Bill C-12 as soon as possible. We need to work together for Canada’s seniors and prevent any future reduction in GIS for seniors who took pandemic benefits.
