As we continue to invest in affordable housing, we must ensure these homes are energy efficient and affordable to heat!

This morning I announced a series of investments from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund to support the planning, construction, or retrofit of over 100 house units in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Thank you to Geoff Stewart, Deputy-Mayor of Colchester, Second VP of FCM, and the incredible Jim Graham, Former Executive Director of the Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia (AHANS) for joining me!

Here in Dartmouth, this funding will help AHANS evaluate energy-efficient measures for their newest construction of 44 housing units, on True North Crescent! You might remember that we delivered $3.7 million to AHANS to help build homes for families on True North Crescent in Dartmouth, at the end of last year.

Our government is working with partners, like the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, to ensure that affordable housing is built across the country, sustainably, and that is designed with energy efficiency and resiliency in mind. Together we are ensuring that families can enjoy lower energy costs while thriving in our communities!

The Green Municipal Fund’s Sustainable Affordable Housing Initiative helps housing providers retrofit existing units for higher energy performance or build new affordable housing to net-zero standards. In its two years of funding, the SAH initiative approved funding for 122 projects, representing more than 24,500 units!
