$28.5 million for nature protection in Nova Scotia!
From our vast coastal views, beautiful lakes and meandering streams to our abundant hiking trails, forests and valleys—Nova Scotia’s beauty must be protected for future generations.
I want you to know that we’re taking big action to help protect nature across Nova Scotia. We just announced a major agreement with the Government of Nova Scotia to help protect and conserve more land and waterways across the province.
As part of this agreement, we’re investing $28.5 million over 3 years to help protect nature. In turn, Nova Scotia aims to increase the amount of protected and conserved areas within the province by 82,500 hectares by March 2026. Together, we’re working to protect at least 20% of the total land and water mass in the province by 2030. This will help us achieve our goal of protecting at least 30% of land and inland water across the country.
We’re always stronger when we work together. And by collaborating with other orders of government, Indigenous peoples and with community stakeholders, we will be able to meet and exceed our conservation targets. The Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia are already leaders in nature conservation, and this agreement will help support Mi’kmaq-led nature protection efforts.
Our agreement will increase protection of sensitive habitats and recovery actions for species at risk and migratory birds, and protect and conserve new Crown and private land in Nova Scotia.
