Build More Homes!

Today in Dartmouth we announced a new way to make federal land available for homes and communities, including a way to:

  • Keep the homes affordable, forever
  • Keep the land public, forever

It launched today and the first round of properties are up. And guess what? Two are in Dartmouth!

Ministers Jean-Yves Duclos and Sean Fraser launched the new Canada Land Bank.

WHAT

We’ve listed federal properties that are able to support housing, and whenever possible we’re going to do long-term leases for the land to ensure every site has affordable housing, forever, and so public land stays public, forever.

WHY

Despite the sea of cranes and construction you’ll see across Dartmouth—Cole Harbour, our vacancy rate remains too low. There are too many families and individuals precariously housed, or simply not housed at all. For every housing announcement I make, it’s clear that so many more are needed to ensure that folks have a safe place to live. We must do more.

Every order of government needs to step up. We must do everything in our power to match the urgency of the housing crisis.

It’s no secret that the federal government has a lot of surplus land, including underutilized lands here in Dartmouth—Cole Harbour and across the country that would be great for communities! Let’s get it done!
