As I watched Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announce his decision to step down as Leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister once a new leader is chosen, I found myself reflecting on the conversations we had when he first asked me to run.

He believed in me, and I believed in the good work we could do together for Dartmouth—Cole Harbour and for all Canadians.

Over the past nine years we delivered important commitments together, like better supporting families by launching the Canada Child Benefit, and delivering investments that helped businesses and communities across Atlantic Canada thrive.

He always put people first. His steady and compassionate hand guided this country through the pandemic, ensuring that the Government of Canada did everything we could to step up for businesses and individuals when they needed it most.

I will always appreciate how often the Prime Minister visited Dartmouth—Cole Harbour, showing his unwavering support for the issues that matter most to our community and to Nova Scotia as a whole. Prime Ministers rarely made these visits before, and his attention truly made a difference.

He is a good friend and I’ve always enjoyed catching up with him, whether at Colleen’s Pub for a bite and a brew, or over a slice of Revana Pizza in my backyard.

I know it hasn’t been an easy journey over the last many years, and I am deeply grateful to his family for sharing him with Canada.

Thank you for everything, Prime Minister.
