You know it’s a good day when every order of government is at the table together to do good.

Today, we announced that all orders of government are at the table to accelerate timelines and affordability at Shannon Park, alongside a new partnership between the Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia to build new permanent affordable housing across the province.

Together, the federal government and the Province of Nova Scotia are committing up to $300 million through Build Canada Homes to help deliver an additional 1,430 affordable homes in Nova Scotia.

As part of this work, shovels are expected to be in the ground within the next 12 months to urgently build 500 units of non-profit and community housing.

HERE’S WHAT THIS MEANS SPECIFICALLY FOR SHANNON PARK:

This is really exciting. You know I’ve been advocating for more affordable housing at Shannon Park, as it must be a complete community that also includes public housing, supportive housing, and affordable housing.

The federal government, the Province of Nova Scotia, and Halifax Regional Municipality are working together to move Shannon Park forward — combining federal and provincial investment and public land with municipal planning support and reduced or waived fees to help homes get built faster and more affordably.

As part of that work, we’re moving ahead at Shannon Park here in Dartmouth—Cole Harbour. The first phase brings together federal Build Canada Homes parcels of land and one of the Province’s recently acquired parcels, and will include up to 930 mixed-market homes, including public housing, supportive housing, and affordable housing.

I’ve said for years that Shannon Park is a generational opportunity. It’s publicly owned land, and it should be used to deliver housing people can actually afford. Today’s announcement is real progress and helps move this important redevelopment forward.

Thank you to Minister Gregor Robertson, Minister John White, and Mayor Andy Fillmore for working with me to help families move back into Shannon Park.
