JUST ANNOUNCED: New submarines for the Royal Canadian Navy — Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) selected!

Along the shores of Halifax Harbour, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the largest defence procurement in Canadian history—Canada’s next generation of submarines for the Royal Canadian Navy.

Canada has selected Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) as the preferred supplier, with rigorous negotiations set to begin on delivering up to 12 Type 212CD submarines for the Navy.

This is a significant moment for Dartmouth—Cole Harbour.

It’s no secret that our community has deep ties to the Navy. We are home to serving Members, Veterans, military families, skilled tradespeople, and local businesses that help support Canada’s naval fleet and maritime security every day.

Today’s announcement reinforces that our communities along the shores of Halifax Harbour and across Nova Scotia will continue to play a vital role in Canada’s defence and maritime future.

This isn’t just an investment in Canada’s security—it’s a generational commitment to Halifax Harbour as a naval and defence hub.

These submarines will strengthen Canada’s interoperability with our NATO allies. TKMS submarines are already in service with more than a third of NATO member nations, helping ensure closer cooperation and shared expertise across allied fleets.

The largest military procurement in Canadian history will require decades of operations, maintenance, training, and industrial support, helping to drive jobs, economic opportunity, and growth in expertise across Canada, including in Nova Scotia, long after these submarines are delivered.

We expect this procurement to create more than 100,000 jobs for Canadians.

Dartmouth—Cole Harbour is proud of its connection to Canada’s Navy, and proud of the role our community will continue to play in keeping Canada strong.

More details to come as negotiations continue.
