There are a lot of volunteers and folks in our community who selflessly work hard for others. A little while ago, I had the opportunity to recognize a few of Dartmouth-Cole Harbour’s champions.

Warren Wesson is the founder of the Dartmouth Shelter Society, the group running Dartmouth’s new overnight emergency shelter. A strong advocate for affordable housing, Warren is dedicated to helping Dartmouth’s most vulnerable community members.

For over 20 years, Claudette Clattenburg has dedicated her time and efforts to helping kids in Dartmouth get active, and get involved in paddling. Her countless volunteer hours make sure that everyone feels welcome.

Debby MacDonald is the heart of the Nourish NS Breakfast Program at Dartmouth South Academy. She knows that kids perform at their best when their bellies are filled with a nutritious breakfast. Debby selflessly volunteers her time helping kids in our community not only get a good head start, but to be attentive learners and build important life skills like leadership and community involvement by sharing meals with their peers.

Jim and Debbie Lowther run VETS Canada. This husband and wife team have devoted their time to helping veterans who are at-risk or experiencing homelessness, so they can get the support they need to reintegrate back into their communities. Since 2010, VETS Canada’s small group of dedicated volunteers has grown into a team of hundreds of hardworking and compassionate individuals who are helping veterans across Canada. Jim and Debbie now have Ground Support Teams in every province. Most recently, the Lowthers have opened their first Drop-in Centre in Atlantic Canada for Veterans, including right here in downtown Dartmouth.

Thank you to all of the volunteers across Dartmouth-Cole Harbour for your generosity. You keep our communities together by giving your time and sharing your gifts with others.
