Earlier today I attended the 75th Anniversary of the Victory of Japan Day and the end of the Second World War ceremony. Thank you to Minister Lawrence MacAulay for joining us.

We honour the more than one million Canadians and Newfoundlanders who served during World War II, including the more than ten thousand who fought in Asia.

The cost of this almost six year war was steep—Canada alone lost more than forty-five thousand and fifty-five thousand were wounded.

As we reflect on this anniversary we must also remember the more than twenty thousand Canadian citizens and residents who were torn away from their families and forced into internment camps here at home. No matter the circumstances, no matter the challenge—we must never let intolerance and racism prevail.
