After a VERY productive House of Commons spring Parliamentary session, I am so pumped to get back home!
In 15 weeks, we managed to pass 15 historic Government bills through the House of Commons. While I’m waiting to get back home to Dartmouth—Cole Harbour, I wanted to take a moment to mention a few highlights.
From meetings, calls, emails, and the incredible chats I’ve had with folks across the riding—I know how much the Canada Disability Benefit means to so many of you. Now that C-22 has received Royal Assent, I want you to know that I will continue advocating to ensure our government continues to work hard to implement this important new measure for Canada’s social safety net. There is a lot of work to do, but we are committed to getting it done.
Delivered through the GST Credit program, the new grocery rebate is on the way in the next couple of weeks to folks in our community who need it the most. I believe delivery is expected on July 5th!
While the provinces and territories are responsible for the delivery of health care, we’ve delivered historic additional funding to help them immediately address current and future health care challenges. More funding alone isn’t enough, and that’s why we’re requiring the provincial and territorial governments to provide proper data to measure and report progress in their health care systems.
Our government’s Canada-wide early learning and childcare plan is already saving many families thousands of dollars on their childcare fees in Dartmouth—Cole Harbour. Through C-35 we’re committing the government to maintaining long-term funding for this program and entrenching the plan in law. So many more women between the ages of 25-54 are working than before we brought out this plan, and we know it’s been life-changing for many families.
We’ve made significant improvements to strengthen the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 through Bill S-5. This means that we are entrenching the right to a healthy environment in law, and we’re better protecting Canadians from toxics. As one of the MPs who worked hard on the 2016 review of CEPA 1999, I am so proud to see this move forward.
These were just a few of the highlights from the spring session! There is a lot more work to do and need to keep up this momentum for the fall session and keep moving Canada forward!
See you soon, Dartmouth—Cole Harbour!
