Happy Tartan Day!!
Here’s a #FridayFlashback to the Dartmouth tartan unveiling!
This beautiful and proud Dartmouth tartan was created by Deana Lloy and is filled significance.
Here’s an excerpt from the The Chronicle Herald where they described what the tartan stands for:
“•Yellow represents three rowing clubs on Lake Banook, where fond memories are held of people filling the banks and hill, taking in Natal Day festivities. It also signifies the bright tomorrow for future generations of Dartmouthians.
•Red clay identifies the rich history of the Shubenacadie Canal and the three main lakes it feeds into.
•Blue represents the harbour, which separates the two adjoining cities. Photos remain to remind people that there was a time when this harbour was full of war ships and to never to forget the tragedy of the Halifax Explosion and the lives lost, people injured and thousands left homeless on that grey day in history, which also destroyed the Mi’kmaq settlement at Tufts Cove.
•Grey identifies the Starr Manufacturing Company, which was first established as a nail factory and later moved on to a world scale for its production of metal ice skates. Grey also signifies the oil stacks of Woodside where the flame no longer burns, as well as the beautiful early morning sea fog hovering over the beautiful harbour from the Dartmouth side.”
