It has been 35 years since more than 4,000 Canadians deployed to the Persian Gulf, ensuring security, providing medical support, and demonstrating the compassion and professionalism that define the Canadian Armed Forces in times of conflict and in times of peace.
Known as Operation FRICTION, this mission marked a historic moment. It was the first time women served in combat roles in the Canadian Armed Forces, changing the face of our military forever.
Canadian warships and helicopters played an integral role in coalition sea operations, while CF-18 squadrons carried out critical combat missions.
Many of us remember the incredible homecoming in Halifax Harbour, with ships returning, Sea King helicopters flying overhead, and people lining the shores and the bridges with Canadian flags. It was a powerful reminder of the pride and gratitude felt across the country.
We owe a profound debt of gratitude to all who have worn the uniform and answered the call to serve. Thank you to those who served then, and to those who continue to serve today.
