There were a few tears of joy at this announcement, that as the kids say, got me right in the feels.

For quite some time, a team of hard-working volunteers have given it their all, spearheading a massive project to preserve and modernize the historic non-profit Banook Canoe Club.

Today, I delivered $2.34 million through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program to finish this special project and make the historic Banook Canoe Club energy efficient and accessible for all!

I’ve been there every step of the way, and what they’re accomplishing is saving a huge part of Dartmouth’s history, while ensuring this special place is accessible for everyone. Projects like these strengthen our community.

From solar panels, energy efficient windows and HVAC—to an accessible lift, ramps and accessible washrooms—this funding means that athletes and community members, of ALL abilities, will be able to use and enjoy this space safely and comfortably, year-round.

Lake Banook is home to Olympians and this project will help ensure it’s inclusive for Paralympians!

Just think how wonderful it will be for folks who take part in Paddle All and Paracanoe programs to be able to inclusively use this space, all of this space, for generations to come.

In Dartmouth, people don’t ask if you paddle—they ask where you paddle. For over a century, the non-profit Banook Canoe Club has been a cornerstone of our community, and these renovations will help preserve its historic building for generations to come.
