Joined by Minister Ahmed Hussen, I just announced a $6.5 million investment to help provide safe and supportive housing here in Dartmouth.
This funding, delivered to HRM through our Government’s Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI), will be used to quickly transform a former hotel, located at 101 Yorkshire Avenue into “The Overlook”.
Opening this year, The Overlook will include 65 affordable, comfortable, and safe housing units for those most vulnerable in our community—complete with wrap around supports to assist those who are homeless or are at high-risk of becoming homeless.
The incredible team at the North End Community Health Centre is already working with some of the individuals who will make The Overlook their home. And the Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia is hard at work on transitioning this hotel into proper homes, complete with supportive services—building a community.
This announcement builds on our previous investment of $8.7 million in affordable housing in HRM through the RHI.
The Government of Nova Scotia is contributing $3.5 million to help purchase the hotel, and will cover $1.5 million per year in operating costs for The Overlook.
We’re always stronger when we work together, and good initiatives like this one are strengthened by having all orders of government at the table.
