PLEASE SHARE – TIME SENSITIVE

Sign up. Show up. Speak up for Dartmouth Cove.

Over the past couple of years, you’ve emailed and called your hearts out—and it is working. Now it’s time to sign up, show up, and speak up to protect Dartmouth Cove.

As we saw with the Northwest Arm, we know that an HRM bylaw is the best way to ensure the public has a real say on unnecessary infill. HRM is holding a public hearing on their proposed bylaw to protect Dartmouth Cove—this is your chance to make your voice heard.

It is heartening to see the majority of HRM Councillors listening to the community, moving this forward and recognizing that Dartmouth deserves the same protection as the Northwest Arm.

As Dalhousie law professor Phillip Saunders has said, HRM’s jurisdiction over these water lots is “crystal clear.” A bylaw can fill in the gaps and coexist alongside federal and provincial roles.

Multiple orders of government have invested in daylighting Sawmill Creek, restoring fish passage, and cleaning up Dartmouth Cove and Halifax Harbour. Life has returned to the Cove. People from across Dartmouth—Cole Harbour and beyond have reached out in record numbers to say this place must be protected.

HRM is listening and is looking to take action, but it’s up to the community to show how much this place matters to help get the bylaw across the finish line.
