I think I can speak for most Canadians when I say that the pictures coming out of the US are troubling. As a Dad, I am deeply disturbed to see these children locked in cages and I feel that we must make sure that the safety, well-being, and security of all children are put above everything else.
Indigenous Peoples are still hurting from Canada’s painful residential school history, which saw countless children separated from their parents. And despite apologies and our best efforts towards reconciliation, that past will continue to harm and create challenges for some time.
It is important that we protect and support human rights around the world.
I’d like you to know that I immediately brought these concerns to the Prime Minister’s Office and will continue this conversation with my colleagues today and the days following.
I urge the United States Government to reverse this immigration policy and put the well-being of children first.
