Over the weekend I attended the D-Day memorial service in Dartmouth, hosted by Somme Branch #31 & Centennial Branch 160.

Today is the 75th anniversary of D-Day, an important milestone in the Second World War, and one of the most defining moments in Canadian history.

On D-Day, June 6th, 1944, Canadians valiantly fought for democracy and they fought for freedom. When Canadian soldiers came ashore on Juno Beach, they made the farthest gains inland. This success set the stage for victory in the Battle of Normandy.

By the time the Battle of Normandy was over, more than 5,000 Canadian soldiers had lost their lives, and over 13,000 were wounded.

We recognize and remember the more than 90,000 Canadian soldiers who served in D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. And we remember the over 1,000,000 Canadians who took part in the Second World War.

Canada remembers and honours their courage and sacrifice.
Lest we forget.
