Last night, as the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill was illuminated orange, a ceremony took place to honour and remember the Survivors of residential schools, and the children who never made it home.

Today marks the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. A day that both honours the Survivors of residential schools and the children lost to its harms, while also publicly recognizing the ongoing intergenerational impacts from the horrors of the residential school system.

As we walk the path of reconciliation, we must listen to Indigenous voices, and we must continue to learn more about the painful truths of the residential school system, while ensuring that the horrors and tragic history of its legacy are never forgotten.
