Had a great visit to the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia and learned more about the incredible No. 2 Construction Battalion—Canada’s first and only all-Black battalion.

During WWI, many Black Canadians who wanted to enlist were turned away because of racism. But they didn’t give up. Their determination led to the creation of No. 2 Construction Battalion

They played a significant role in supporting crucial timber operations, producing the lumber needed for the war effort. This lumber was used to line the trenches, build bridges, walkways, and observation posts—even French fighter aircraft. The mill produced over twice as much lumber with the No. 2 Construction Battalion on board. These men played a huge role in the war effort.

If you haven’t been to the Black Cultural Centre, I recommend checking it out!

Huge thanks to Executive Director Russell Grosse for the kind invitation—it was nice to catch up with you and learn more about your important ongoing work.
