It’s great to see progress and multiple phases underway at 80 True North Crescent in Dartmouth!

Back in December, we delivered $3.7 million through our government’s Rapid Housing Initiative to the Affordable Housing Association of NS (AHANS) to help build this truly affordable housing development. The Rapid Housing Initiative is just one part of Canada’s 10-year $82+ billion National Housing Strategy. And this Rapid Housing Initiative project is one of several here in HRM!

Separately, we also delivered funding to help AHANS evaluate and plan energy efficient measures to help this development reach net-zero. The key is to ensure that the housing development produces (at least) as much energy as those living there will use!

These investments will help ensure that rents at 80 True North Crescent will remain affordable for generations to come.

This is just one example of what can happen when all orders of government work together, and work with stakeholders to build more housing in our communities. But to be clear, all orders of government have to step up.

Federally, we also provide funding directly to the province of Nova Scotia for needed supports such as the Canada—Nova Scotia Housing Benefit, rent supplements, and funding to repair and revitalize public housing.

We’ll continue to work in collaboration with provinces, territories, and directly with municipalities to advance big and bold solutions to ramp up the construction of more homes here in Nova Scotia and across Canada. We absolutely must ensure the affordability of existing housing while increasing the supply of new affordable housing.
